| Who are we really?
Star Barks is owned and operated by the Mitchell Family. Mary and Jimmy and Peppy. Jimmy does all the baking (sometimes Mary has to help him, of course!), Mary does pretty much everything else (and can you guess who's writing this?!). Peppy - the "Chief Eating Officer" does all the taste tasting for the dog treats.
Mary and Jimmy grew up in Staten Island, New York. Peppy, our dog, is a handful. We rescued him from a foster home in New Jersey. Peppy went right up to us when we met, even though his foster mom said "be careful, he might growl." He never did growl at us, and seemed to know instinctively that we were the ones for him. He must have been homeless and abused, because it took a lot of work for him to trust people (he's still a little unsure sometimes). If you ever come to the store, you'll know what we mean.
After suffering through one too many NY winters, and a job layoff after 9/11, we packed our bags and went south to sunny Florida. We sold the house in New Jersey, and decided to start our own business. After working for many, many years in big corporations, this was something that we knew we had to do. Being animal lovers all our lives, it was natural to start a pet business. Having lost a wonderful dog named Fudge already to cancer, we decided to do something good and right for our furry friends. And that is how Star Barks was born.
Our goal from the beginning was to make an all natural, healthy, good for the dog treat, that was also fun and yummy. After extensive research with veterinarians (thanks especially to Dr. Pinkwasser, of Courtyard Animal Hospital in Wellington, FL!), friends and most importantly a lot of dogs, we've come up with some excellent dog treats. And we're having lots of fun too!!! (goal #2) We opened quickly after moving to Florida in a small space in a discount mall in West Palm Beach. We then started selling our treats at every outdoor market and craft show we could think of. The response was all positive and overwhelming. People were coming back saying their dogs absolutely loved our treats and refused to eat any other treats. One year later, we moved to a bigger location in Jupiter...711 W. Indiantown Road, Jupiter Town Centre. Just a few blocks west of Military Trail, and a 5 minute drive east from the Turnpike or 95. Now we have lots of space to bake and to sell some other fun stuff too. Now approaching our 5th anniversary (has it really been 5 years??!!), we are still growing and learning. We have expanded our selection of natural dog foods, and have some of the best foods your dog can eat...at reasonable prices!
Dogs are welcome at any time in our place, and Peppy gets to go to work every day (well, some days he's just too tired!). We continue to create new and exciting treats, and continually research for new ideas. Dogs with allergies are of special concern to us, and we try to accommodate all our furry friends.
